Why Do My Ears Feel Clogged? Common Causes and When to See an Audiologist

That clogged, plugged-up feeling in your ears can be frustrating. Sounds may seem muffled, your own voice may sound different, or you may feel pressure that you just can’t seem to clear.

Sometimes the cause is simple and temporary. Other times, a clogged sensation can be a sign that it’s time to have your hearing and ears evaluated.

Common Causes of Clogged Ears

Earwax Buildup

Earwax is completely normal and actually helps protect the ear canal. But when too much accumulates, it can block the ear canal and cause muffled hearing, pressure, itching, or a feeling that something is stuck in the ear.

Trying to remove impacted wax yourself with cotton swabs can sometimes push it farther into the ear canal, making the problem worse.

Allergies and Congestion

Seasonal allergies, sinus congestion, and colds can affect the Eustachian tubes, which help regulate pressure in the middle ear. When these tubes aren’t functioning properly, your ears may feel full or clogged.

You might also notice popping or crackling sounds, particularly when swallowing or yawning.

Changes in Air Pressure

If your ears feel clogged after flying, driving through the mountains, or experiencing another rapid change in elevation, pressure is likely the culprit.

Most pressure-related symptoms resolve on their own, but persistent pain or hearing changes should be evaluated.

Fluid in the Middle Ear

Fluid behind the eardrum can create pressure and make sounds seem muffled. Although middle-ear fluid is particularly common in children, adults can experience it as well.

Hearing Loss

This one surprises many people. Sometimes what feels like a clogged ear isn’t actually a blockage at all.

Certain types of hearing loss can cause sounds to become muffled or less clear, creating the sensation that something is blocking the ear. If the feeling persists despite having no obvious congestion or wax buildup, a hearing evaluation can help determine what’s going on.

When Should You Have Your Ears Checked?

If the clogged sensation lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, or is accompanied by noticeable hearing changes, tinnitus, dizziness, drainage, or discomfort, it’s worth having your ears evaluated.

Sudden hearing loss, particularly in one ear, should be treated as urgent and evaluated promptly by a medical professional.
